George Fairfax Memorial Award

Overview / Purpose

The George Fairfax Memorial Award seeks to enable practising theatre artists, who have graduated from drama, the opportunity to enhance professional careers in the theatre industry. In doing so, they will reflect the spirit and vision of a man who worked tirelessly to ensure that this country would have a thriving theatrical future.

An award of $20,000 will be presented.

Who can apply

Applications are open to practising theatre artists and those who have graduated within the past ten years, preferably with at least three years industry experience.

Applicants must:
- Hold or be eligible as a graduand to hold, a Bachelor of Dramatic Art(Acting), Graduate Diploma in Animateuring, Graduate Diploma in Dramatic Art – Direction, Graduate Diploma in Performance Creation or a Masters degree in Animateuring or Direction, arising out of studies at VCA Drama in the Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts.
- Be an Australian citizen or have resided in Australia for the four years immediately preceding application for the Award.
- Make an application for entry on the prescribed form and in the prescribed manner.

Assessment Criteria

The judges will examine all material submitted for the Award and may at their discretion interview any applicant before submitting their recommendation or recommendations to the Director and Dean of the faculty. The judges will initially meet to consider the quality of applications presented and make a selection for possibly personal interview before submitting their recommendation or recommendations to the Director and Dean of the Faculty. If the judges consider that two or more applicants are of equal merit they may require such applicants to attend an interview with a view to ranking them.
