National Library of Australia (NLA) – Community Heritage Grants (CHG)

Overview / Purpose

This program aims to provide assistance with the preservation of locally owned, but nationally significant collections of materials that are publicly accessible including artefacts, letters, diaries, maps, photographs, and audio visual material.

Grants of up to $15,000 are available.

Who Can Apply

Eligible applicants include not-for-profit, incorporated organisations that:
- Own or manage a collection of nationally significant material.
- Are accessible to the general public.

Examples of not-for-profit, incorporated organisations which are encouraged to apply are:
- Archives
- Art galleries
- Community groups
- Genealogical societies
- Historical societies
- Indigenous groups
- Migrant community groups
- Museums
- Professional associations
- Religious groups

Other organisations, such as public libraries and independent museums located within universities, may also be eligible to apply.

Eligible Activities

Eligible projects include:
- Collection preservation projects
- Training projects

Assessment Criteria

The main assesment criteria include:
- Collection preservation projects
a) National significance of the collection
b) Project feasibility
c) Value for money
d) Benefit to the collection
- Training projects
a) Quality and appropriateness of the training proposal
b) Credentials of trainers
c) Value for money

Restrictions

The following are ineligible for funding:
- In-house salaries and volunteer labour costs, including per hour project management costs
- Publishing projects
- Exhibition research, interpretation and signage, and design
- Collecting projects
- Oral histories (recording or transcribing)
- Memorials and plaques
- Interpretive signage or heritage trails
- Building works, capital works, repairs and improvements to existing buildings
- Digitisation and microfilming of newspapers or magazines
- Family history research
- Emergency activities
- Activities that are in progress or have been completed
- Private collections
- Labour costs to carry out rehousing
- Software development and website development
