Advance Queensland – Young Starters’ Competition

Overview / Purpose

This competition helps connect with leading innovators, develop their business skills and help get their startup idea ready for investors. It forms part of the Advance Queensland Young Starters program which is designed to build, attract and retain young entrepreneurial talent, build the startup ecosystem to position Queensland as an attractive investment destination with a strong innovation and entrepreneurial culture.

There are three competition stages:
- Stage 1: Enter by sending the first competition tweet and completing eligible entrepreneurial activities. Opened 18 September 2016 and closes 31 March 2017, 4pm AEST.
- Stage 2: The top 30 individuals or teams from Stage 1, will be invited to produce a short, 3-5 minute pitch video to showcase their entrepreneurial potential to the independent judging panel. Commences upon acceptance of invitation and concludes on 12 May 2017 at midnight (AEST).
- Stage 3: Finalists will be invited to attend an exclusive 2-day bootcamp with mentoring sessions and pitch coaching to help them refine their projects. Commences upon acceptance of invitation and concludes on 30 June 2017 at midnight (AEST).

Prizes will be age appropriate and may include:
- Participation in a startup mission to a global innovation hot spot (if aged over 18).
- An entrepreneurial skills program for their school (if aged under 18).
- Mentoring.
- Co-working space.
- Showcasing at a startup event.
- Up to $5,000 to progress their startup.

There will be two categories for winners of Stage 3 of the competition:
- Overall winner (selected by the judging panel): Winning competitor to receive prizes valued up to $30,000.
- People’s Choice winner (as selected by attendees to the Pitch Event): Winning competitor to receive prizes valued up to $15,000.

Up to ten teams will present a live pitch at a final Young Starters’ Competition Pitch Event.

Who Can Apply

Eligible applicants include registered participants, and excludes employees and their immediate families of the Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation. Immediate family includes the following: siblings, defacto, spouse and children.

Competitors must:
- Be aged between 15-24 years of age at the time of joining the competition.
- Be residents of Queensland for the duration of the competition.
- Have parent or guardian approval to enter if under 18.
