DCS Community Grant Funding Programs

Overview / Purpose

This program aims to provide additional innovative, imaginative and creative services and programs within both the custodial and community based settings.

The program aims to meet key strategic priorities within DCS, such as:
- Reducing reoffending 10% by 2020.
- Strengthen the strategic partnerships to reintegrate offenders back into the community.
- Provide targeted intervention and rehabilitation services.
- Improve the support and engagement of victims of crime.
- Improve the multi-disciplinary management of offenders with complex needs.

There are two types of grants available:
1. Community grants
- These are non-recourse grants and may be short term and may be specifically designed to address location or regional needs.
- Grants of up to $10,000 are available.

2. Community program grants
- These may have longer delivery timeframes or require significant investments by the funded organisation.
- Grants of up to $40,000 are available.

Grants are one-off for the programs/services specified and are not intended as a recurring funding source.

Who Can Apply

Eligible applicants include organisations that must:
- Be non-government, incorporated community organisations that are not-for-profit.
- Provide social welfare and help for disadvantaged individuals, families and communities in need in South Australia.
- Have a registered Australian Business Number (ABN).

Organisation can be a local council if the applicant is a separately managed community group.

Eligible Activities

Eligible programs/services include those seeking an innovative range of supports that aim to enhance opportunities for prisoners and offenders to live a crime-free lifestyle. Protective factors include addressing matters such as:
- Employment
- Health
- Housing
- Relationships
- Finance and budgeting
- Household management
- Other key life skills

Examples of outcomes could include:
- Identification of educational goals
- Parenting skill development
- Increased stability in partner relationship

Assessment Criteria

The main assessment criteria include:
- Extent of benefit
- Relevance
- Equity
- Sustainability
- Cost effectiveness
- Applicant capacity
- Partnerships
- Complementary nature

The following are ineligible for funding:
- Ongoing funding.
- Activities, programs or projects with the objective of making financial profits.
- Projects where alternative sources of funding are more appropriate.
- Salaries where the salary form part of the organisations/individuals usual responsibility.
- Recurrent operating or maintenance costs for day-to-day operations of the organisation/group.
- Projects that are a duplication of an existing service, program, project or event in that location.
- Travelling allowances.
- Prize money.
- Projects which have a political or religious purpose or objectives.
- Projects which are deemed to be inappropriate and offensive.
- Overseas organisations.
