Overview / Purpose
The TravelSmart program aims to reduce car use, and promote safer, greener, more active travel. The TravelSmart Grants provides opportunities to members of the community, local government and business sectors to deliver projects that promote the use of alternative travel options which result in using the car less. Reducing the overall number of kilometres driven in the car is the overall objective of the TravelSmart Grants.
Who can apply
All applicants must have an ABN for invoicing purposes. Groups that are eligible to apply include (but are not limited to):
- Community groups
- Non-government organisations
- Workplaces
- Tertiary institutions
- Pre-school or high schools
- Local councils
Eligible Activities
Each application will be assessed on its potential to demonstrate an ongoing shift to more sustainable personal travel choices. Successful applications need to demonstrate a reduction in car kilometres. This can be achieved in various ways, such as:
- Substitute some car trips with another option: e.g. by walking, cycling or using public transport
- Use the car smarter and more efficiently: e.g. by car pooling, or combining multiple smaller trips into one consecutive journey (‘trip chaining’)
- Reduce the distances travelled by car: e.g. by encouraging the support of local shops, services and activities
- Eliminate the need for some journeys: e.g. by working from home, doing banking, bill paying etc. by phone or internet.
